For the next four weekends, The Creative Independent will become a public park. While living in cities, parks have always been calm spaces that help me center myself and my creative process.
A little backstory
During the pandemic, I was living in New York and would walk through Prospect Park (near my apartment) daily. The park changed a lot over the course of a day. In the mornings, the dog walkers would be out. In the evening the picnickers would come out, someone might be blasting tunes on a boombox, the cyclists would be doing their laps. I began to appreciate this shared space that could hold all these energies at once.
I started taking one minute videos of these different park scenes as a small practice. I liked using the video feature on my phone as a sort of meditation timer. I would find a park scene, hold up my phone and look past it at the scene, tap record, let it count to 60, focus on my breath and try to be still.
Later, I started calling these videos "One Minute Parks." As a web artist, I made a little website (oneminutepark.tv) with instructions on how to One Minute Park and invited others to contribute their videos.
So far, 110 people have contributed videos from all over the world. We now have 239 minutes of parks. The hope is to fill all the minutes of the day (1440 minutes). I invite you to one minute park and if you feel like it contribute a video. Thank you for visiting.
another minute in the past,
Elliott
