Dear reader,

Happy summer. I'm writing to you from the window of Extra Practice. It's overcast and a bit windy. Jack and Gijs are here, and Mysterious River Snake is playing on the stereo.

Lately, I've been doing some thinking about possible futures and trying to understand where I want to put my energy in the next year. But this letter will focus on the last months and maybe in doing so, manifest what I need more of in the future. I'd also be curious to hear how you go about planning for the future.

In May, Kristoffer and I wrapped up the first issue of the Internet Phone Book, an annual phone book of personal websites. The first issue sold out quickly on Are.na's gift shop and we're hard at work on a reprint. If you'd like to be notified when it's available again, subscribe to this list. We've also started planning Issue 2.

We held several book launches for Issue One: at Extra Practice in Rotterdam, Birdcall in Seoul, and Adad Books in Athens. Thank you to Wietske, Emma, and Jack for the beautiful phone book cake. It felt like a full circle moment to see the phone book at Adad Books, where Kristoffer and I first came up with the idea.

I've mentioned it before, but over the last year, my view of websites has shifted. I've been seeing them as buoys or beacons. Websites (especially when they're handmade) mirror the personality of the maker, and you get a sense of the person behind them. I like thinking about sites this way, because they become a bit more human and less about art or design or code.

In other news, Kat Macdonald's One Minute Park video is now part of British Film Institute's online moving image collection.

Lastly, HTML Energy (Laurel and Elliott) is having another another HTML Day this August. Mark your calendars for August 2nd. Get in touch if you'd like to organize a local freewrite in a park near you: elliott@html.energy.

I'm seeking web design and development projects, preferably ongoing. I primarily work with static sites or Kirby CMS. My past work can be found at magenta.elliott.computer.
